The Andhra Pradesh state government is keen to see the construction on the much-awaited Hyderabad Metro Rail project start in early 2011.

The state cabinet yesterday discussed the progress on the project and directed the municipal administration and urban development department take up the work related to land acquisition to ensure that the January deadline was not missed.

The cabinet has estimated the total land requirement for the Metro Rail project at 269 acres of which 61 acres is government land, while of the remaining 208 acres of private land, exactly half would need to be acquired in Miyapur and the other half in Nagole.

Quoting officials of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) The Times of India reported that they were in a position to hand over the required land to Larsen & Toubro, the engineering and construction firm that has been awarded the contract and is required to begin construction by the beginning of next year. "Of the 269 acres of land needed for the project, only 57 acres is required for the construction of terminals and stations. We have already acquired more than 60 per cent of this and would be in a position to complete the process by the year-end.

The remaining 212 acres needed for the project is for the construction of depots. That process we will begin now in right earnest. The project is on course," a senior HMRL official told the paper.

The report quoting unnamed sources said the HMRL board was slated to meet on Saturday and ratify the decision of the award of the project to L&T. A formal announcement on the private partner in this public-private partnership initiative would be made later according to the report.
