The central government has announced a Rs100 per cylinder reduction in the price of cooking gas (LPG), in a move that will benefit over 100 million households across the country.

Announcing this on Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, “especially benefiting our Nari Shakti”.

“Today, on Women's Day, our government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti,” Modi Tweeted.

This price cut, which comes after several rounds of price hikes, will make a 14.2 kg gas cylinder to the ordinary consumer in Delhi at Rs803 while Ujwala beneficiaries will get it at Rs503.

Prices may vary from state to state depending on local taxes.

The reduction in gas price has been made possible because of easing of international oil and gas prices, against which domestic fuel rates are benchmarked.

The government on Thursday also announced the extension of Rs300 per LPG cylinder subsidy to beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana for the next fiscal starting 1 April.

Cooking gas (LPG) is sold to consumers across the  country at non-subsidised prices while beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana and consumers in remote  areas get the subsidy amount deposited in their bank accounts.
