Prime minister Manmohan Singh met Cameron for the first time after latter took over as British Premier last month on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Toronto on Sunday. Singh congratulated Cameron on his victory and extended an invitation to him to visit India, which he accepted. He would be coming in July, officials said.

Cameron had visited India in 2006 as a leader of opposition.

Like the previous Labour government, the new coalition government is also keen to build a special relationship with India.

In London on Sunday, foreign secretary William Hague signalled a major change in Britain's foreign policy, saying the UK wants to elevate its relationship with India, and many ministers will be visiting the country to this end.

Unveiling "the distinctive British foreign policy", Hague told The Sunday Telegraph, "Britain must forge a distinctive new global identity which focuses as much on emerging nations such as India, Brazil, Chile and the Gulf states."
