Consumer price inflation for agricultural and rural workers at 6.94% and 6.87% in February

Consumer price inflation based on the all-India consumer price index for agricultural labourers rose slightly to 6.94 per cent in February 2023 while that for rural labourers edged lower to 6.87 per cent during the month, as per preliminary data released by the ministry of labour on Monday.

Point-to-point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL and CPI-RL stood at 6.85 per4 cent and 6.88 per cent, respectively, in January 2023 and 5.59 per cent and 5.94 per cent, respectively during the corresponding month of the previous year. 
Food price inflation in February 2023 stood at 6.82 per cent and 6.68 per cent, respectively, against 6.61 per cent and 6.47 per cent, respectively, in January 2023 and 4.48 per cent and 4.45 per cent, respectively, during the corresponding month of the previous year.
The consumer price index (Base: 1986-87=100) for the month of February, 2023 increased by 1 point each to stand at 1,171 and 1,182 points, respectively. The maximum upward pressure on the general index of agricultural and rural labourers came from miscellaneous group to the extent of 0.93 and 0.98 points, respectively, mainly due to increase in prices of medicine, doctor’s fee, barber charges, bus fare, washing shop, cinema ticket etc.
The rise/fall in index varied from state to state. In the case of agricultural labourers, it recorded an increase of 1 to 8 points in 12 states and a decrease of 1 to 7 points in 8 states. Tamilnadu with 1,359 points topped the index table whereas Himachal Pradesh with 915 points stood at the bottom.
In the case of rural labourers, it recorded an increase of 1 to 8 points in 12 states and a decrease of 1 to 7 points in 8 states. Tamilnadu with 1,349 points topped the index table whereas Himachal Pradesh with 961 points stood at the bottom.
The maximum increase in the consumer price index numbers for agricultural and rural labourers was reported in Gujarat (8 points each) mainly due to rise in the prices of rice, wheat-atta, jowar, pulses, vegetables and fruits, firewood, etc. On the contrary, the maximum decrease in the consumer price index numbers for agricultural and rural labourers was reported in Assam (7 points each), mainly due to a fall in the prices of  fish, green chillies, vegetables  and fruits, etc.
