Food price inflation edges up to 16.37 per cent

Inflation rate based on the wholesale price index of food articles in the country climbed further to 16.37 per cent (provisional) during the week ended 2 October 2010 from 16.24 per cent (provisional) in the previous week, even as prices of essential items continued to rise.

The increase in inflation rate was due mainly to higher prices of fruits and vegetables (5 per cent), gram and bajra (2 per cent each) and masur, urad, barley and moong (1 per cent each). 

Food price inflation rate stood at 11.21 per cent in the comparable week of the previous year (3 October 2010).

Build-up of food price inflation so far during the financial year (beginning 1 April 2010) was 10.28 per cent (provisional) against 14.81 per cent in the corresponding week of the previous year.

The index for the 'food articles' group rose 0.9 per cent to 181.3 (provisional) from 179.7 (provisional) in the previous week due to higher prices of fruits and vegetables (5 per cent), gram and bajra (2 per cent each) and masur, urad, barley and moong (1 per cent each).  However, the prices of fish-marine (4 per cent) and arhar and condiments and spices (1 per cent each) declined.

Inflation rate based on the wholesale price index of non-food articles jumped to 22.73 per cent (provisional) during the week ended 2 October 2010 against 22.21 per cent (provisional) in the previous week.
