University Grants Commission (UGC) has revised its rules on degree programmes, to allow students pursue two degrees at the same time, a decision that could potentially change the higher education landscape of the country.

UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar made the big announcement on Wednesday.
UGC chairman said that students can now pursue two degree programmes simultaneously in physical mode. These can be full-time degree programmes and would offer more room to students who wish to pursue other courses.
Kumar has said that students can opt for this scheme of simultaneous degree programmes either from the same university or a different institute, according toa PTI report. While details are awaited, the announcement shows that UGC is taking some big steps to change the order of things in higher education institutes.
The changes being introduced by UGC are expected to be in line with National Education Policy, NEP 2020. Even when NEP was introduced, the idea was to have a world-class education system in the country.
Recently, news also surfaced of 4-year long degree programmes soon to be implemented in the country, a move that would increase the value of a Bachelor's degree.
Among other changes being introduced, UGC has also implemented Common University Entrance Test (CUET) after joining hands with National Testing Agency, NTA. CUET will now be held throughout the country for all those who wish to get admissions to central universities.
