India's industrial production up 9.1 per cent in September

Industrial production in the country rose 9.1 per cent in September 2009 compared to the level in September 2008. The index of industrial production (IIP), with base 1993-94, stood at 301.4 for the month, quick estimates of industrial production released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) showed.

Cumulative growth of industrial production for the first six months of the current fiscal (April-September 2009-10) stood at 6.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the pervious year.

Mining, manufacturing and electricity production recorded growth rates of 8.6 per cent, 9.3 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively, in September 2009, with their production indices rising to 176.9, 326.1 and 236.6, respectively.

Cumulative growth in production during April-September, 2009-10 over the corresponding period of 2008-09 in the three sectors have been 8.2 per cent, 6.3 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively, which moved the overall growth in the general index to 6.5 per cent.

Industry-wise, as many as 12 out of the 17 industry groups showed positive growth during September 2009 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'other manufacturing industries' showed the highest growth of 24.5 per cent, followed by 'basic chemicals and chemical products (except products of petroleum and coal) at 20.1 per cent and 'machinery and equipment other than transport equipment' at 16.5 per cent.
