India’s core sector production up 3.1% in October

Core sector industrial production in India grew 3.1 per cent in October 2024 against the 2 per cent growth in September helped by higher production of coal, refinery products, steel, cement, electricity and fertiliser.

The eight core sector industries, having a weight of 40.27 per cent in the general Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a cumulative growth of 4.1 per cent in April-October 2024.

The final growth rate of the eight core industries, comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity, for July 2024 stands revised to 6.3 per cent.

Production of coal, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the IIP, increased by 7.8 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative coal production increased by 6.2 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 4.8 per cent in October 2024 while its cumulative production declined by 2.5 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 1.3 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative production of natural gas increased by 1.5 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) increased by 5.2 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative refinery production increased by 2.7 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Fertilisers production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 0.4 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative fertiliser production increased by 1.5 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.2 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative steel production increased by 5.9 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) increased by 3.3 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative cement production increased by 1.8 per cent during April-October 2024-25.

Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 0.6 per cent in October 2024 while cumulative power generation increased by 5.3 per cent during April-October 2024-25.
