India’s core sector output tanks 2.5% in October

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 2.5 per cent year-on-year in October 2020 , at a more steeper rate than the 0.8 per cent decline in September 2020, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.

Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 13.0 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Final growth rate of the eight core industries for July 2020 stands revised to (-) 7.6 per cent.
Coal production, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the general index of industrial production (IIP), increased by 11.6 per cent year-on-year in October 2020 while cumulative coal production during April-October 2020-21 declined by 3.6per cent.
Production of crude oil (weight: 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 6.2 per cent in October 2020 while cumulative crude production declined by 6.1 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 8.6 per cent in October 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 12.5 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Refinery products (weight: 28.04per cent in IIP) declined by 17.0 per cent in October 2020  while cumulative refinery throughput declined by 16.4 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.3 per cent in October 2020 while its cumulative production increased by 4.1 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) declined by 2.7 per cent in October 2020 while cumulative production of steel declined by 22.8 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) increased by 2.8per cent in October 2020 while cumulative cement production during April-October 2020-21 declined by 21.3 per cent.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 10.5 per cent in October 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 5.6 per cent during April-October 2020-21.
