India’s core sector industrial production up 3.3% in August

Core sector industrial production in the country, based on the combined index of eight core industries, increased by 3.3 per cent (provisional) year-on-year in August 2022, on the back of an increase in the production of fertilisers, coal, refinery products, steel, cement and electricity. 

The combined index of production in selected eight core industries, viz, coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity, comprising 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), recorded a growth of 9.8 per cent during April-August 2022-23 compared to the corresponding period of previous fiscal. 
Final growth rate of the Core Sector Index for May 2022 now stands revised to 19.3 per cent from its provisional level 18.1 per cent. 
Coal production, having a weight of 10.33 per cent, increased by 7.6 per cent in August 2022 over August, 2021. Cumulative production of coal increased by 22.7 per cent year-on-year during April-August 2022-23.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 3.3 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative production of crude oil declined by 1.1 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 0.9 per cent in August 2022 while its cumulative production increased by 2.6 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) increased by 7.0 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative refinery production increased by 10.8 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 11.9 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative production of fertilizers increased by 11.4 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 2.2 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative steel production increased by 5.8 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) increased by 1.8 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative steel production increased by 10.6 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 0.9 per cent in August 2022 while cumulative generation of electricity increased by 10.5 per cent during April-August 2022-23.
