More than one billion people in the world are now undernourished, according to latest figures.

The 2010 Global Hunger Index released by the International Food Policy Research Institute shows that child malnutrition is the biggest cause of hunger worldwide, accounting for almost half of those affected.

Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia were shown to have the highest levels of hunger.

India has been ranked 67, just ahead of Bangladesh but way below neighbouring countries like China and Pakistan, in the index, released on Monday.

It rated 84 countries on the basis of three leading indicators - prevalence of child malnutrition, rate of child mortality, and the proportion of people who are calorie deficient.

China is rated much ahead of India at the ninth place, while Pakistan is at the 52nd place on the 2010 Global Hunger Index, released by the (IFPRI) in association with a German group Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.
