The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index of food articles in the country eased a bit and stood at 10.35 per cent (provisional) during the week ended 7 August 2010 against 11.40 per cent (provisional) in the previous week.

The slight dip in inflation rate was due mainly to a fall in the prices of moong and masur (-2 per cent each) and urad and bajra (1 per cent each).

Food price inflation stood at 14.18 per cent in the comparable week a year ago (week ended 8 August 2009).

Build-up of food price inflation so far during the financial year (beginning 1 April 2010) was 3.72 per cent (provisional) for the week ended 7 August 2010 against 10.86 per cent in the corresponding week of the previous year.

The index for the 'food articles' group, however, rose 0.2 per cent to 298.6 (provisional) during the week ended 7 August 2010 from 298.1 (provisional) in the previous week due to higher prices of maize (2 per cent) and tea, rice, fish-marine and condiments and spices (1 per cent each). However, the prices of moong and masur (-2 per cent each) and urad and bajra (1 per cent each) declined.

Inflation rate based on the wholesale price index of non-food articles eased a bit to 21.70 per cent (provisional) during the week ended 7 August 2010 from 21.79 per cent (provisional) during the previous week. Inflation rate for the group stood at a negative (-) 3.59 per cent in the comparable week of the previous year.
