Eight worst-hit states have 69% of new corona virus caseload, says health ministry

Eight worst-hit states, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chhattisgarh account for 69 per cent of new cases of corona virus infection in the country, data released by the union ministry of health and family welfare show.
With the addition of 41,322 new confirmed Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the number of active corona virus cases in India stands at 4,54,940, representing 4.87 per cent of the country’s total population.
While 69.04 per cent of the daily new cases are contributed by eight states of Maharashtra, Delhi, Kerala, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chhattisgarh, 23 states/union territories have fared better in tests per million population compared to the national average.
Maharashtra leads the tally with 6,185 new Covid cases. Delhi has recorded 5,482 cases, while Kerala follows with 3,966 new cases.
Tests per million population has crossed 1 lakh mark today, with a record 100,160 tests conducted on Friday. The cumulative number of tests stands at 138.2 million, while the number of tests per million population crossed 1 lakh mark.
According to the health ministry, sustained and progressive expansion in testing infrastructure has played a crucial role in the steep rise of testing numbers. With 2,161 testing labs in the country including 1,175 government laboratories and 986 private laboratories, the daily testing capacity has got a substantial boost.
About 78.35 per cent of the 485 case fatalities reported in the past 24 hours are concentrated in ten states/UTs.
Delhi with 98 deaths reported the maximum new fatalities. Maharashtra saw a fatality count of 85, followed by West Bengal with 46 deaths.
