Delhi I-T to set up special camps for filing returns

Making it easier for salaried persons, senior citizens and the physically handicapped to file their tax returns, the Income Tax department will organise two camps with 264 special counters at Mayur Bhawan (Connaught Place) and Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi.

According to the department, the camp at Mayur Bhawan will take place from 21-23 July 21 23 and again from 26-27 July, while at Pragati Maidan it will be from 28-31 July. Special arrangements, with separate counters and help-desks, will be made for senior citizens and differently-abled assessees.

''This year we're expecting 5 lakh I-T returns from these two camps having 264 counters. There'll be a growth in e-filing, as the latter has a 15 per cent share of the total returns,'' said chief commissioner, Income Tax (Delhi circle 1) Meenakshi Singh at a press conference on Monday.

''Returns of only senior citizens and differently-abled persons will be received at Mayur Bhawan and Vikas Bhawan (ITO) from 28-31 July,'' she added.

The chief commissioner, I-T Delhi-13, R Bhardwaj emphasised that the returns should be without annexures, and an assessee to get his refunds must furnish details of PAN, Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) and complete postal address and the MICR code mentioned in the bank's cheque book.

While on 31 July the counters will remain open from 10 am to 8 pm, on the rest of the days, it is 10 am to 6 pm.

The tax officials said taxpayers should not wait for the last day for filing returns on 31 July to avoid the rush. The returns are to be filed for assessment year 2009-10.

For senior citizens and differently-abled persons, separate counters will be available while free consultancy services from chartered accountants. The electronically filed returns should be sent by ordinary post to the department's centralised processing centre in Bangalore.
