Core sector production down 8.5 per cent in August

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 8.5 per cent year-on-year in August 2020 compared with a 9.6 per cent (provisional) decline in July 2020, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.

Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 17.8 per cent during April-August 2020-21.
Final core sector production growth for May’2020 has been revised to (-) 21.4 per cent, based on revised data.
Coal production, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the general index of industrial production (IIP), increased by 3.6 per cent in August 2020. Cumulative production of coal during April-August 2020-21 declined by 10.2 per cent.
Production of crude Oil, (weight of 8.98 per cent n IIP) declined by 6.3 per cent in August 2020 while Its cumulative production declined by 6.1 per cent during April-August 2020-21 year-on-year.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent) declined by 9.5 per cent in August 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 13.7 per cent during April-August 2020-21.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) declined by 19.1 per cent in August 2020 while cumulative refinery production during April-August 2020-21 declined by 17.5 per cent.
Fertilizers production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 7.3 per cent in August 2020 while cumulative production of fertilizers increased by 4.6 per cent during April-August 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) declined by 6.3 per cent in August 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 33.0 per cent during April-August 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) declined by 14.6 per cent in August 2020 while cumulative cement production during April-August 2020-21 declined by 29.1 per cent.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) declined by 2.7 per cent in August 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 10.5 per cent during April-August 2020-21.
