Core sector industrial production down 1.3% in December

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 1.3 per cent year-on-year in December 2020, against the 2.6 per cent decline registered in November 2020, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.

Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 10.1 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Final growth rate of the eight core sector industries for September 2020 has been revised to 0.6 per cent from its provisional level of (-) 0.8 per cent for the month.
Production of coal, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the index, increased by 2.2 per cent year-on-year in December 2020. Cumulative coal production declined by 1.9 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in the index) declined by 3.6 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative crude production declined by 5.7 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in the index) declined by 7.2 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative production of natural gas declined by 11.6 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in the index) declined by 2.8 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative refinery throughput declined by 13.5 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent in the index) declined by 2.9 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative production of fertilisers increased by 3.0 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in the index) declined by 2.7 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative steel production declined by 16.7 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37per cent in the index) declined by 9.7 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative cement producton declined by 18.3 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in the index) increased by 4.2 per cent in December 2020 while cumulative generation of electricity declined by 3.7 per cent during April-December 2020-21.
