Consumer price inflation rate decelerates to 5.18% in February

Consumer price inflation in the country ended a rising trend and eased a bit in February, helped by a fall in the prices of some food items. CPI inflation has been moving up for six straight months.

Consumer price inflation based on the general consumer price index numbers for February 2016 (base 2012=100) stood at 5.18 per cent, slightly lower compared to 5.69 per cent in January this year. Consumer price inflation during February 2015 stood at 5.37 per cent.

Food price inflation based on the consumer food price index (CFPI) for February 2016 stood at 5.30 per cent against 6.85 per cent in January 2015 and 6.88 per cent in February last year.

Consumer price inflation rate for rural areas stood at 5.97 per cent in February 2016 against 6.48 per cent in January and 5.79 per cent in February last year.

Food price inflation based on the consumer food price index (CFPI) for rural areas in February stood at 5.96 per cent against 6.93 per cent in January this year and 6.43 per cent in February last year.

Consumer price inflation rate for urban areas stood at 4.30 per cent in February against 4.81 per cent in January this year and 4.95 per cent in February the year before.

Food price inflation based on the consumer food price index (CFPI) for urban areas in February stood at 4.23 per cent against 6.50 per cent in January this year and 7.52 per cent in February the year before.
