Consumer price inflation for industrial workers marginally down at 9.7 per cent in October

Consumer price inflation based on the all-India consumer price index for industrial workers on (CPI-IW) declined marginally to 9.70 per cent in October 2010 from 9.82 per cent in the previous month (September 2010).

The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (having base 2001=100), however, increased 2 points and stood at 181 in October 2010.

During October 2010, the index recorded an increase of 11 points at the Kodarma centre, 7 points in Giridih, 6 points in Mercara, 5 points each in Bhilwara and Ghaziabad centres, 4 points each in 4 centres, 3 points each in 4 centres, 2 points each in 12 centres and 1 point each in 32 centres.

The index decreased by 2 points in Ludhiana and by 1 point each in 3 centres, while in the remaining stationary in 17 centres.

The maximum increase of 11 points in Kodarma centre was mainly on account of an increase in the prices of rice, wheat, fish, milk, onion, garlic, vegetables, fruits etc. The increase of 7 points in Giridih centre was due to increase in the prices of rice, atta, milk, onion, vegetables, etc. The increase of 6 points in Mercara centre was due to increase in the prices of rice, mutton, onion garlic, vegetables, firewood etc.

The increase of 5 points in Bhilwara centre was due to increase in the prices of rice, mutton, milk, onion, tea (readymade),  firewood, auto rickshaw charges etc and, in the case of the Ghaziabad centre, it was due to increase in the prices of rice, wheat atta, vegetables, tailoring charges etc.

The decrease of 2 points in Ludhiana centre was due to decrease in the prices of atta, arhar dal, masur dal, moong dal, vegetables, fruits etc.

The indices for six major centres were: Ahmedabad - 178,  Bangalore - 184, Chennai - 162, Delhi - 168, Kolkata - 177 and Mumbai - 181.
