Consumer price inflation edges lower to 5.17% in March

Consumer price inflation edged lower to 5.17 per cent in March from 5.37 per cent in February as food prices came down slightly, raising hopes of RBI reducing policy rates and thereby allowing banks to reduce lending rates.

Consumer price inflation based on the revised price series (with 20112=100 as the base year) stood at 5.17 per cent in March against 5.37 per cent in February, provisional figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed.

The CPI inflation rate was 8.25 per cent (revised) in March 2014.

Food price inflation in March stood at 6.14 per cent in March 2015 against 6.88 per cent in February and 8.64 per cent in March 2014.

The rate of consumer price inflation for rural areas stood at 5.86 per cent in March 2015, against 5.79 per cent in February and 8.11 per cent in March 2014.

Food price inflation rate for rural areas stood at 5.69 per cent in March 2015 against 6.34 per cent in February and 9.02 per cent in March 2014.

For urban areas, CPI inflation rate stood at 4.75 per cent in March 2015, against 4.95 per cent in February and 8.29 per cent in March 2014.

Food price inflation in urban areas stood at 6.76 per cent in March 2015 against 7.52 per cent in February and 7.96 per cent in March 2004.
