Mumbai kept its cool amidst a nationwide strike by trade unions and other groups that paralysed life and business across most parts of the country today, the first day of a two-day Bharat Bandh.

While most banks were shut, trains and buses were running normally and government offices were open. The airport union also decided not to participate in the strike.

Barring stray incidents of stone pelting on buses and banks remaining shut for general public, Mumbai remained mostly unaffected by the national strike.

Around 100 Left activists tried to stop suburban trains in Andheri but were prevented by the police.

With suburban train services, the city's lifeline in full strength and the BEST plying more buses than normal and taxis and autos out in full strength, it was just another day for Mumbaites.

Municipal services like garbage collection and disposal and the supply of essential services like water, milk, vegetables, power and gas supplies were normal in most places.
