Bank credit growth slackened in December 2009: RBI report

Bank credit growth was substantially lower at 10.6 per cent in December 2009 against 25.3 per cent in December 2008, Reserve Bank data on of top hundred centres in the country released today showed.

Aggregate bank deposits of top hundred centres also increased at a lower rate of 17.5 per cent in December 2009 over December 2008 compared to a growth of 20.2 per cent recorded a year ago, RBI said in its 'Quarterly Statistics on Deposits and Credit of Scheduled Commercial Banks: December 2009' 

The share of bank credit of the top 100 centres stood at 77.5 per cent of the aggregate bank credit against 78.6 per cent in December 2008.

The top hundred centres, arranged according to the size of deposits, accounted for 68.9 per cent of the total deposits in December 2009, against 69.2 per cent in December 2008.

In terms of gross bank credit, the top 200 centres and 31.5 per cent of reporting offices accounted for 81.0 per cent of gross bank credit.

In terms of aggregate deposits, the top 200 centres
covered 31.9 per cent of reporting offices and 74.0 per cent of aggregate deposits.
