Bangalore has pipped the four metro cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai to emerge as the best city to live in India, according to a new global survey

The survey of 221 cities worldwide has, however, ranked Bangalore at a low 141st position in terms of standard of living.

The survey, the 'Quality of Living Survey - Worldwide Rankings, 2011' conducted by global human resources consultancy major Mercer, has ranked Vienna as the best city in the world to live.

Vienna is followed by Zurich, Auckland, Munich, Dusseldorf, Vancouver, Frankfurt, Geneva, Copenhagen and Bern, in that order among the top-ranked cities in terms of quality of living.

The other Indian cities included in the `Quality of Life' list are Bangalore (141st), New Delhi (143rd), Mumbai (144th), Chennai (150th) and Kolkata (151st).

In terms of personal safety standards, Luxembourg takes the top place among the world's cities, followed by Bern, Helsinki, Zurich, Vienna, Geneva and Stockholm.

Indian cities also rank better on personal safety standards, with Bangalore ranked 117th, New Delhi and Kolkata at a joint 127th position, Mumbai at 142nd and Chennai at 108th.

Bangalore ranks top in India both in terms of quality of living and the personal safety standards.

The personal safety ranking is based on internal stability, crime levels, law enforcement and country's international relations.
