Army, IAF mount rescue operations in Tamil Nadu

The Army and Air Force have been deployed to help rescue stranded citizens in Kancheepuram district, where torrential rains have left scores of residents marooned, even as a large part of suburban Tambaram locality was inundated by the rainwater.

Chennai city received no fresh rains today.

The Indian Army's 4 Madras Regiment personnel were pressed into service at Mudichur in Kancheepuram at the request of the district administration, while the Air Force conducted sorties to rescue citizens, according to defence officials said.

They added, surplus water from lakes and tanks at Mudichur entered the suburban Tambaram locality, due to which a large part, of the locality was inundated. Personnel from Army and IAF were now assisting the district administration in the rescue efforts.

IAF helicopters from the Air Force station at Tambaram conducted six sorties, evacuating 22 persons last night. They added, food packets and water were also air dropped.

They added, the army too was now involved in the process of evacuation.

Evacuation of citizens had also to be resorted to in Kotturpuram and nearby areas in the city, as the discharge from Chembarambakkam lake caused the Adyar river to flow in spate.
