Gujarat polls set for 13 and 17 December; Himachal Pradesh polls on 4 November

The Election Commission today announced a two-phase schedule for elections to the Gujarat assembly and a single-day polling in Himachal Pradesh.

Gujarat will go to polls on 13and 17 December while polls to the Himachal assembly will be held on 4 November, chief election commissioner VS Sampath said while addressing a press conference in New Delhi.

Counting of votes in both the states, however, will be held on 20 December, the CEC said.

With the announcement of poll dates, the model code of conduct come into effect in both the states.

"The Model Code of Conduct has come into operation from this very moment. The EC will enforce it strictly and will monitor all activities related to the elections in these states," Sampath said.

Elections to the to states assemblies are important for both the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party and the Congress Party at the centre after their poor show at the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
