To help users gather information about unfolding natural, man-made or humanitarian disasters, Google's search results and map tools will now come with SOS Alerts.

Google said in a post yesterday that people can get access to critical information and resources from local authorities and first responders. Also they will be shown news articles, emergency telephone numbers and other useful information in a single place.

"During a crisis, people need real-time information. Whether they're experiencing an issue on the ground or trying to understand the situation from afar, we want our products to give people quick access to important information -- such as what is going on and where it is happening -- to help them stay safe and informed," Google said.

On activation of SOS Alert, Google maps tool suggests which areas need to be avoided, the roads that were closed and places where people could seek refuge in.

A BBC report showed data gathered from the firm's crowdsourced Waze mapping platform also made it possible to see where traffic jams, accidents and other problems had been reported by the public.

"The level of detail shown within the search tool depends on whether the person carrying out the query is close to the incident. If nearby, they are presented with links to official alerts, tweets from first responders and useful short phrases in the local language," the report said.

Meanwhile Google's VP, Engineering Yossi Matias wrote in a blog, "During a crisis, you may see an SOS Alert at the top of search results when searching for the incident or location. You'll see maps, top stories and - when available - authoritative local information such as emergency phone numbers, websites, and translations of useful phrases. Depending on how close you are to the affected area, you may also get a notification on your mobile device that directs you to this information.

"If you're outside of the affected area, you may still want information about the crisis. Searches for relevant terms (like the name of the event or the location) will also show an SOS Alert that provides a timely overview of the situation, in addition to features such as donation opportunities."
