Twitter suffered a major global outage on 19th May, with the web as well as app versions of the website rendered dysfunctional and users who tried accessing getting an error message.

Users who tried to log in through the desktop were shown the message, ''Sorry, we couldn't complete your request.'' App users were shown the ''Something is technically wrong'' message while trying to access the app. Twitter said the issue had been caused by an ''internal server error''.

An update regarding the issue was shared on Twitter Support account on the micro-blogging site. Readers were assured that the site would be up and running shortly. The issue was however resolved and users could once again access to the social media portal in about an hour.

In India, the website seemed glitchy throughout the  day and experienced an outage of nearly 35 minutes in the morning. But the site still continued to remain intermittently inaccessible for multiple users.

The site went down again at 5.30PM, for nearly 10 minutes, but later normal operations were restored and the site was running smoothly.

Japan was the worst affected as per data by Down Detector.

According to commentators, the micro-blogging site has been facing a lot of challenges with regards to growth and staying ahead in the intensely competitive market.

The outage hit cities in India including New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. According to Down Detector, the outage also hit the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, parts of France and the US.

While Twitter was working on a solution, people were suggesting conspiracies with some going so far as to claim that this was a Denial of Service or DDoS attack organised by Russia.

The outage also inspired a flurry of jokes when the website came back online.
