Leading Indian newspapers winners at INMA Awards 2009 competition

The winners at the 79th International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA) Awards 2009 were announced in Miami last week. The INMA represents the world's best newspaper marketing campaigns from the past year.

The awards were presented before 200+ media executives from around the world gathered for the INMA conference's closing gala dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami. INMA unveiled 90 first place, second place, and third place recipients of the coveted INMA Award. The association's president, Ed Efchak, presented the awards.

INMA is the world's leading provider of global best practices and marketing ideas for newspaper companies looking to grow amid profound market change. Based in Dallas with offices in New Delhi and Antwerp, the association has 1,200 members in 82 countries worldwide.

The 73-year-old INMA Awards 2009 competition generated 531 entries from nearly 157 newspapers in 43 different countries. Judging was conducted via the internet by 21 judges worldwide. Judges included executives in the media, advertising, marketing, and research industries. Judges selected award recipients in 10 categories in three circulation groups: under 75,000, 75,000-300,000, and over 300,000.

Winning the coveted ''Best of Show'' award was The Gazette in Montreal, Canada, for its single-copy marketing campaign titled ''Elections.'' The second-place for ''Best of Show'' went to Dagens Nyheter in Stockholm, Sweden, for an online audience and engagement campaign titled ''DN Mobile.''

The third-place for ''Best of Show'' was presented to The New York Times for its new marketing services campaign titled ''Single-Sponsor Olympics Issue of Play: The New York Times Sports Magazine.''

The 2009 ''Best of Show'' finalists were selected by judges, and INMA members worldwide selected the order of finalists.

The Gazette's win of ''Best of Show'' puts the Canadian newspaper among elite company. Recent recipients of this honour include The Times of India, Kleine Zeitung in Austria, Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany, The New York Times in the United States, Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, Berliner Zeitung in Germany, Cape Times in South Africa, The Australian in Australia, and The New Zealand Herald.

Brazil's A Crítica won three first-place awards. Seven newspapers won two awards each: The New York Times, USA; Winnipeg Free News, Canada; The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia; The Gazette, Canada; Het Nieuwsblad, Belgium; and Ekstra Bladet from Denmark.

Judging was based on concept, creativity, copy/graphic design, production, and overall effectiveness, as well as results. Entries were judged in comparison to other entries.

INMA, originally known as International Newspaper Marketing Association, changed its name in 2008 to signify its asociation with the enlarged newsmedia than the restrictve newspapers
