The Pajero from the Mitsubishi stable draws the same kind of attention on Indian roads as a Mercedes Benz, a BMW or a Lexus. The version of the Pajero that has been launched in India is the latest 3200cc inter-cooled, turbo-charged, diesel engine-fitted model called Pajero GLX, priced at around Rs 33.8 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The model is characterised by a muscular exterior styling bulging wheel arches and horizontally-straked doors. What is revolutionary about the vehicle is the monocoque (one-piece) construction chosen in place of a body-on-frame design to improve the dynamics, reduce weight and make for a roomier cabin. Its suspension is a totally independent set-up and the company's engineering team claims that the Pajero's handling is on a par with the Merc M-class.

The 3.2-litre CBU variant has a number of features, including some high-tech gadgets. For one, it has a monocoque body and belongs to a higher generation of Pajeros. It comes with an altimeter, barometer and even a compass. Seating is flexible and comes with a high degree of comfort. Air bags are standard for front passengers as well as for side impact.

Even the base model (GL) comes with power steering, though there's no central locking or air-conditioner. The top-of-the-line GLS model comes with a long list of accessories including, a six CD-changer with six speakers.

The CKD model to be assembled in India has a normal chassis platform and comes with a smaller 2.8 turbo diesel engine, which churns out 125bhp and can pull a massive 292Nm of torque. It comes with a new cyclone-type pre-air cleaner, which increases the intake of air while reducing that of dirt and water. The Super Select 4 x 4 system smoothly shifts through four driving modes to optimise torque transfer. The interiors come with every kind of luxury you could hope for.
