Maruti WagonR
05 Jul 2007

Some say the WagonR from the Maruti Suzuki stable is the original tall boy and was the inspiration behind the design of the Hyundai Santro.
The WagonR is the most popular car in Japan, for reasons of space and parking constraints peculiar to that country. Its width and length makes it easy to park just about anywhere and its height makes it seem spacious, the intention behind the design.
When WagonR was introduced in India in 2000 it was equipped with a 1.1-litre MPFI ignition system, powered by a 62bhp @6000 rpm engine and a torque of 8.4gm @3500 rpm. With these specifications it was comparable to cars in the upper mid-size C segment in India and available at a price that was between B and C segment at the time. For instance the Esteem, which has since been upgraded and now comes with a 1.3-litre MPFI engine with 85 bhp, was then available with a non-MPFI, 65bhp engine.
It is not surprising that much was expected from this car in India at the time. This did not materialise for the reason that most cars in the upper C segment subsequently got upgraded to the MPFI system and engines with higher brake horsepower.
The fact remains that for a car of its dimensions it has an extremely powerful engine, the power to ration being very favourable. It is also extremely manoeuvrable and its turning circuit is probably better than the Zen's.
Its height at 1660 against the Esteem's height of 1395 mm and Zen's height 1405 mm makes it an easy car to get in and out of. Its fuel consumption is lower than other Maruti models and gives on an average 11 km per litre of petrol. It is available in the LX, AX, Vxi Lxi and the Anniversary variants.
All variants are equipped with features like reclining rear seats, tinted glass, remote fuel cap release, music system and manual door mirrors, while some safety features include central locking, protective mouldings on side doors, child-proof locks on rear doors, energy absorbing collapsible steering column and side impact door beams.
