MeeGo to usher in invehicle infotainment

A brand new operating system (OS) called MeeGo is coming to BMW, GM and many other car brands. According to the GENIVI Alliance, the open source operating system (OS) MeeGo, which it has developed would be the basis of their next reference release for in-vehicle infotainment.

A non-profit industry alliance, GENIVI counts BMW Group, Delpi, GM, Intel, Magneti-Marelli, PSA, Visteon and Wind River as its founding members.

Its MeeGo is a brand new species of operating system (OS), sourced from Moblin and Maemo is a result of collaboration between Nokia and Intel platforms.

In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) is a rapidly growing and evolving field encompassing all digital applications for use of all travellers in a car. It covers navigation, entertainment, connectivity to devices, car networks and broadband networks.

According to a press release, the adoption of MeeGo in vehicles of the future point points to the cross-device, cross-architecture advantages the platform offers.

However the release did not give any time frame for the debut of MeeGo-enabled scalable platform to cater to mobile information and entertainment sectors in vehicles.
