New Delhi: Air India Express, the first state-run low cost domestic airline, will likely begin serving domestic routes from October 1. Officials say that two brand new Boeing 737-800s will be added to the existing fleet of Alliance Air, which is also being merged into AI Express.

According to AI officials, tickets will be priced at levels comparable to those offered by other LCCs, and it would also offer meals on board. This may likely assume the pattern adopted by American airline Southwest, where passengers pick up packets even as they enter the aircraft.

According to current plans, the airline will target trunk routes between metros, as also sectors not adequately covered by full service carriers.
