DGCA set to triple staff strength

New Delhi: India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is set to boost staff strength to almost three times its current size, in order to adequately meet its responsibilities. It currently fields a staff of about 250, and has now created 427 Group-A posts in its various directorates across the country.
DGCA sources said with the aviation industry growing at a fast rate it needed to increase staff strength in order to ensure decentralisation and strengthening of regional offices.
It also said the recruitment process would take two years.
The DGCA's overall responsibility is to ensure proper and safe functioning of the airline industry in the country. The functions it is supposed to perform include registration of civil aircraft, formulation of standards of airworthiness for civil aircraft registered in India and the grant of certificates of airworthiness to such aircraft.
It also oversees licensing of pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, flight engineers and air traffic controllers.
It also has to ensure that all aviation regulations in line with international requirements are met.
