Raytheon has been awarded a $437 million contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which will see the company support the agency's training of air traffic controllers.

FAA acting Administrator Robert Sturgell said that the contract is a performance based one, and is designed to allow the FAA to train its controllers ''better, faster and cheaper.''

The 10-year contract awarded to Raytheon will effectively replace separate contracts that support initial training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Additionally, it will also replace ongoing training in air traffic facilities nationwide.

Under the contract's terms, the FAA said Raytheon will be responsible for helping the FAA train controllers from the time they're hired and throughout their career.

This would include conducting resident academy qualification and specialised training, supporting classroom and simulation training in the field, the development and maintenance of training materials and providing administrative support for training.

The FAA will still be responsible for managing the overall training program, recruiting and hiring candidates. It will also conduct their performance verification, on-the-job training and credentialing.
