American Airlines cancels another 1,000 flights - leaves 110,000 passengers stranded

Dallas: American Airlines, the world's largest carrier, cancelled at least 1,000 flights yesterday in the wake of an FAA instituted inspection of its fleet of MD-80 jets for faulty wirings. In the process, it left an estimated 110,000 travelers stranded at airports across the country.
American grounded an estimated 300 MD-80 family jets in order to check their compliance with a federal safety order that detailed how wiring bundles on the planes were to be attached to the wheel wells of the aircraft.
These cancellations followed 460 made on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration said it will be reviewing compliance with more of its directives through 30 June. According to the FAA's acting administrator, Robert A. Sturgell, there could be "a handful of situations that will cause disruptions."
Another US carrier, Delta Air Lines, is inspecting all 117 of its MD-88 planes as well.
