The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will have the responsibility of selecting private developers for a Greenfield airport project in Sindhudurg district, according to reports in the media.

The ministry for civil aviation had accored its in-principle approval to the green field airport project proposed by the Maharashtra state government. The cost of the project has been pegged at Rs492-crore, and the domestic airport at Sindhudurg will come up on the public-private-partnership basis.

MIDC will act as the nodal agency for the selection of PPP partners. The airport will be constructed on 270 hectares of land already in the possession of the state government. The site is located at Chipi Parule in Vengurla taluka in the southern part of Sindhudurg district, bordering Goa and Karnataka.

Reports indicate that private partners would have to arrange financing for the project, and the private party who would implement the project would be selected through competitive bidding.

MIDC was the nodal agency for the Pune international airport project, where it is also a 13 per cent shareholder.
