Turkish Airlines to take 3 aircraft from Jet Airways on lease
08 Feb 2010
Turkish Airlines has signed an agreement with Jet Airways to take three Boeing 777 aircraft from the Indian carrier on lease, agency reports quoted unnamed sources as saying.
The reports said the Turkish flag carrier signed the deal for the wide-bodied aircraft last week.
Turkish Airlines had earlier taken four Boeing 777 aircraft on a 25-month lease from Jet Airways, for which the lease period would be over by November 2011.
The airline is in the process of enhancing its share in the global aviation market with the purchase of 35 Boeing 737 jets - 20 definite and 15 optional.
The latest addition comes close on the heels of the recent announcement of the purchase of 30 Airbus planes by Turkish Airlines.
The airline plans to acquire a total of 105 new aircraft in the next few years and the rapid expansion positions Turkish Airlines as one of the fastest growing airlines in the world.
By the end of 2015, the fleet of Turkish Airways will rise to 155, with another 36 twin aisle aircraft in its fleet. Turkish Airways will then have a fleet of 196, of which five will be cargo planes.
Though the deal size is not known, market experts say a brand new Boeing 777-300ER or Boeing 777-200LR could be rented for $1.2 million per month on dry lease as per current international rates.
