Air traffic seen falling by a further 2.1 per cent this fiscal

The number of air passengers is expected to fall by a further 2.1 per cent in 2009-10 over and above the 6.8 per cent fall in 2008-09, according to a government projection, based on growth of aircraft movements and passenger traffic (both domestic and international) during the last three years.

The growth rate in the number of air passengers has steadily fallen from 31.4 per cent in 2006-07 to 21.2 per cent in 2007-08 and to a negative (-) 6.8 per cent in 2008-09. This is expected to fall further to (-) 2.1 per cent in the current financial year (2009-10) a government press release said.

The growth rate in the movement of aircraft also declined from 28.6 per cent in 2006-07 to 21.3 per cent in 2007-08 and to a negative (-) 0.1 per cent in 2008-09. This, the release said, is expected to fall by a further (-) 2.1 per cent in 2009-10.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) estimates air passenger traffic growth rate (both domestic and international) to revive form a negative (-) 2.1 per cent in 2009-10 to 4.5 per cent in 2010-11 and further to 4.9 per cent in 2011-12.

Similarly, AAI estimates growth rate of aircraft movements to go up from 3.4 per cent in 2009-10 to 4.8 per cent in 2010-11 and further to 5.3 per cent in 2011-12.

Minister for civil aviation Praful Patel gave the above information in the Lok Sabha today.
