US, India sign civil aviation cooperation agreement

India and the United States have agreed to work towards a meaningful co-operation under the Aviation Cooperation Programme (ACP) as India tries to modernise its rapidly expanding aviation industry.

An official delegation comprising civil aviation secretary Madhavan Nambiar, director-general of civil aviation Nasim Zaidi and Airports Authority of India chairman VP Agrawal has signed an agreement with the US Trade and Development Agency to this effect.

Under the agreement, the US administration, through its Federal Aviation Authority will fund a number of projects in the country.

The two sides also agreed to hold the next India-US aviation summit in the US on mutually convenient dates in December 2009, an Indian Embassy release said.

The delegation reviewed the progress of implementation of the Open Skies Agreement signed in April 2005 and the Aviation Cooperation Programme (ACP) signed in June 2007 besides discussing issues of mutual concern.

The two sides also discussed the future direction of the bilateral cooperation and agreed to work towards making ACP in meeting challenges of its rapid expansion in terms of safety, technology and communication support and air space management.
