Trading giant Mitsui & Co and Japan Airlines Limited (JAL) will jointly offer a new cargo service that will provide a comprehensive transport service to suit the specific needs of global customers.

Under the arrangement, Mitsui will provide  logistics solution services centering on sea freight and land transport operations while JAL will offer its air cargo transport service.

"At a time when global demand in the logistics sector is weak, and as the industry continues to face a challenging year ahead, JAL and Mitsui both recognise the need to expand service territories and to raise the level of convenience and service standards by providing a comprehensive and seamless transport process that will meet the needs of the customers. The companies hope that through the partnership, they can both transcend the frameworks of a logistics division in a general trading firm and of an airline, and integrate their respective features and functions to offer support to the businesses of their customers," JAL said in a release.

The two companies will begin sales operations for the new logistics service from 1 July.

Mitsui, meanwhile, has agreed to pick up 48 per cent stake in five free trade warehousing zones (FTWZs) being developed by India's Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC).
