Virgin drops passenger fuel charges; Lufthansa lowers fuel surcharge
20 Oct 2008
Virgin Atlantic has announced a reduction in its passenger fuel charges. The charges would be cut by up to £13 per sector, depending on the destination and class of cabin.
Economy passengers will now pay £10 less on shorter sectors, and £13 less on longer sectors. Premium Economy passengers would have to shell out £5 less on shorter sectors and £6.50 less on longer sectors.
An announcement by the airline said that the new fuel charges will be as under:
- Economy Premium Economy Upper Class
- Shorter sectors £68 £83 £98
- Longer sectors £96 £114.50 £133
Virgin Atlantic said the longer sectors are London to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Beijing Tokyo, Shanghai, Sydney, Mauritius, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Hong Kong.
With crude oil prices dropping, jet fuel prices too have decreased, consequently, German airline Lufthansa has also decided in favour of reducing its fuel surcharge for its flights.
Lufthansa's fuel surcharge on domestic German and intra-European routes would now be lower by €3 to €24 per flight segment.
On long-haul routes, the corresponding fuel surcharge would decrease by €5 to €92 per flight segment, and would be applicable to all Lufthansa tickets issued on or after 20 October 2008.
In a statement, Lufthansa said it monitors oil prices continually, and would make any future adjustments to the fuel surcharge dependent on further trends in the price of jet fuel.
