Cathay Pacific realigns services to offset fuel costs
12 Aug 2008
Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific has announced further redeployments in capacity in an attempt to offset rising fuel prices. The changes include the addition of eight new weekly flights to Australia and shifts to larger aircraft for 14 weekly European services.
The number of weekly flights to North America will now be reduced to ten.
The airline had earlier announced in July that it would add four new weekly flights to Dubai and Bahrain, while reducing services to Vancouver and Toronto.
Chief executive Tony Tyler said: 'We have to maximise our earnings during this difficult period which is why are moving our capacity.
'However, while we are reducing services on some routes, we will continue to maintain the integrity of our network, reshaping it where necessary to ensure we fly aircraft to where we can cover our costs.'
Earlier this year, Cathay Pacific added 20 flights a week from Hong Kong to India, a move it said was intended to help develop its base as 'one of the world's leading international aviation hubs'.
