American Airlines says July traffic down 3.5 per cent

New York: American Airlines said Monday its passenger traffic fell 3.5 per cent  in July and coupled with a 1.2 per cent reduction in capacity since July 2007, it experienced a load factor or occupancy of 85.8 per cent.

This was down from 87.8 per cent in the same month a year earlier.

American is the nation's largest airline.

It also said that revenue passenger miles, a unit that measures one paying passenger flown one mile, was also down 2.2 per cent, to 12.46 billion, from 12.91 billion a year ago. Occupancy was down 0.4 percentage points, to 81.6 per cent.

Available seat miles, or capacity, was down 3 per cent to 14.52 billion, from 14.70 billion.

Domestic traffic was down 5.3 per cent.
