New Delhi: High fuel costs and half-filled flights are increasingly forcing carriers to cut down on the number of flights they operate. Major domestic carriers, state-owned Air India and the largest private carrier Jet Airways have cancelled 30 and 20 flights respectively due to shrinking demand.

Their response is reflected elsewhere in the industry with Delhi-based budget carrier, SpiceJet, slashing the number of flights it operates by around 10.  Merged entity, Simplify Deccan, has cut 50 flights from its itinerary.

Jet Airways spokesperson have apparently clarified that these are temporary measures.

Budget carrier GoAir has also reduced the number of flights to various sectors to 800 a month, as compared to the normal 1,000 a month. The carrier has said the cuts are on account of the upcoming lean season.
