New Delhi's IGI airport yesterday experienced only a couple of hours of dense fog but with visibility at around CAT-I, low visibility procedures had to be implemented for the entire day. Though around 100 flights were delayed, there were no cancellations or diversions for the first time in four days, with airlines finally starting to deal with the backlog since Saturday.

According to meteorological records, the airport was covered in fog around an hour at 1.30 am and then again around 5.30 am, with general visibility dropping to 200 metres. However, runway visual range on new and main runways was well above 700 metres.

CAT-I operations were adopted on the new runway from 10 p m on Monday to almost 8 am on Tuesday. However, LVP had to be implemented at 9.16am and continued till around 5pm following which LVP had to be re-implemented at 5.44 p m and it had still not been discontinued at 11 am this morning.

Visibility conditions on the main runway were only slightly better with LVP being implemented at around 10.10 am yesterday, but it later followed the new runway. Visibility at the airport touched the lowest level between 2 pm and 4 pm with Runway Visual Range (RVR) down to around 400 metres.

The night operations numbered 63 while the remaining part of the day saw over 300 operations.

Several late night flights both domestic and international were rescheduled for the morning though there were no explanations as to why these did not take off as per schedule if visibility was not poor.
