New Delhi: Private carrier Jet Airways is the country's largest by number of passengers carried, cornering a little more than a quarter of the overall market in the January-July 2009 period. The number of air passengers dipped 4.9 per cent to 2.48 crore in the same period as compared to 2.6 crore for the same period last year, official data released here on Wednesday said.

Private carrier Jet Airways and its low-cost carrier JetLite, with 26.3 per cent market share, carried most number of passengers during the period. Kingfisher came second with 23 per cent market share and state-owned Air India came in third with 16.2 per cent, data released by the Director General of Civil Aviation said.

Low-cost carrier, IndiGo garnered a market share of 14 per cent during the period, while SpiceJet and GoAir managed shares of 12.5 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively.

Regional carrier, Paramount Airlines, has a share of 2 per cent.

Passenger load factor remained low in July, with the number of domestic passengers falling to 35.97 lakh in July from 36.94 the month before.

These figures spark concerns that the crisis in the aviation industry will be a prolonged one.

Kingfisher would have reasons to be satisfied with the July numbers as it carried most number of passengers in this month - 829,000 – overhauling Jet, with 681,000 and Air India with 582,000.
