India reports higher air passenger numbers for October

New Delhi: With the onset of the winter schedule, even as the holiday season kicks off, domestic carriers  may take some cheer from passenger numbers for October, which show that the number of passengers travelling with airlines rose by a little over 17 per cent.

The total number of passengers flown by domestic carriers for the month went up to 3,133,000, from 2,676,000 in the previous month. According to official traffic data, private carrier, Jet Airways, continued to attract more passengers than any other domestic airline in the country with a total of 617,000 passengers for the month.

Jet was closely followed by Air India (domestic) with 565,000 and Kingfisher Airlines with 445,000.
Amongst LCCs , Air Deccan, now called Kingfisher Red, carried 418,000 passengers. Kingfisher Red was followed by IndiGo with 402,000 air travellers, SpiceJet with 297,000, JetLite 254,000, GoAir 75,000, Paramount 50,000 and MDLR 7,000.

In terms of market share, Jet claimed a share of 19.7 per cent while Air India (domestic) cornered 18 per cent.  Kingfisher followed with a share of 14.2 per cent. Kingfisher Red had an impressive market share of 13.3 per cent for October.

IndiGo closely followed with 12.8 per cent.

No-frill carrier MDLR logged the maximum seat factor of 76.2 per cent, all- business class Paramount Airways' 69.2 per cent. JetLite followed with 68.9 and 66 of IndiGo. Among the full-service carriers, Jet Airways was ahead with a seat factor of 64.5 per cent followed by Air India's 59 and Kingfisher's 58.
