Mumbai: With the Supreme Court giving the go ahead to rehabilitate a larger number of land encroachers, chances are that slums surrounding Mumbai airport may finally disappear. As of now there are nearly four lakh slum dwellers encroaching on nearly 300 acres of airport land in Mumbai.

The country's apex court has extended the cut off date to rehabilitate encroachers, from January 1, 1995 to the year 2000. With the extension between 40-45,000 families will now be resettled as compared to 25 to 30,000 families as per the earlier deadline of 1995.

With the apex court's order, more slums will now be cleared allowing for the release of additional land for Mumbai's airport.

The GVK Group led Mumbai International Airport Ltd's expansion plans aims at building new cargo hubs, passenger and other facilities.
