Port Blair: The Centre has cleared the deck for the Veer Savarkar Airport (VSA) here to be declared as an international airport. Port Blair is the capital city of the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal.

Giving an international status to the airport is expected to increase the pace of development in the islands, with special emphasis on tourism.

With the decision, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is now expected to build required  infrastructure here, which would allow the VSA to handle greater volume of domestic as well as international traffic.

The VSA is presently managed by the country's defence services.
