Rome: Russia's largest airline, Aeroflot, has stepped into the bidding war for Italian carrier Alitalia. The Italian Government put up the debt-ridden airline on sale recently, putting 39.9 per cent of its 49.9 per cent share of the airline on the market.

Alitalia has already attracted the attention of airlines such as Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Air China, Emirates Airline and now Russia's largest airline, Aeroflot.

The trend is likely to continue with other airlines expected to place their bids for the Italian carrier soon.
