Agra, Ajmer most likely candidates for new airports

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry is mulling over proposals to construct as many as 15 greenfield airports around the country. At the moment, two greenfield projects are under way - at Hyderabad and Bangalore, while the one at Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra is awaiting final clearance.
According to ministry sources, fresh proposals for greenfield projects are now being considered for Agra and Ajmer, which are both important tourist destinations that have also remained unconnected by air.
It would appear that the government is looking at new projects, not only for these two cities but also for others that are important from the tourism point of view. According to officials, proposals have been received by the civil aviation ministry from 11 States for projects to be based at the following cities: Bijapur, Gulbarga, Shimoga and Hassan (Karnataka), Karaikal (Pondicherry), Ajmer , Agra , Mopa (Goa), Passighat, (Arunachal Pradesh), Pakyong (Arunachal Pradesh), Cheitu (Nagaland), Asansol (West Bengal), Kannur (Kerala), Cuddapah and Warangal (Andhra Pradesh).
Officials said that the proposals would be looked at on a case-by-case basis before approval.
